There is a Problem

<--- Return to The Gospel

Sin entered and infected this world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the garden of Eden. In revealing Himself to us, God has demonstrated through the law He has given, and through the conviction of our own conscience, that He is infinitely holy, and that we are defiant, defiled, and totally depraved sinners by birth and by choice.

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
                                  Romans 5:12

Barren-Trees-Small

Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

                                  Romans 3:19-20

The Lord has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
                                  Psalm 14:2-3

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
                                  Romans 3:23

The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?
                                   Jeremiah 17:9

This divine assessment of the plight of each and every human being has the most terrifying implications. Rebellion is the ultimate manifestation of pride. Sin is rebellion against God, it is the defiant breaking of God's holy commandment. To break even one of God's commandments makes us guilty as commandment breakers.

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
                                   James 2:10

To disobey God is sin, and because of God's holiness, sin has the most serious consequences.

For the wages of sin is death . . .
                                   Romans 6:23a

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
                                   1 Corinthians 15:56

Physical death is a consequence of our sin. But physical death is declared by God to only be the first death. For those whose guilt has not been entirely removed so as to satisfy the righteousness and holiness of God, there is a second death that will be incomparably worse than the first. The apostle John was given a glimpse of what is soon to come in the book of Revelation:

And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
                                    Revelation 20:10-15

Jesus taught often and clearly of the solemn fact that the day will come when there will be a reckoning for each and every person who stands condemned before God.

So it will be at the end of the age; the angels shall come forth, and take out the wicked from among the righteous, and will cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
                                    Matthew 13:49-50
